Kenya is facing its first ever Ebola outbreak. On 6 October 2026 the Ministry of Health confirmed an imported case of Bundibugyo virus disease in a traveller who arrived in Nairobi from the Democratic Republic of the Congo via Uganda. By 20 October, nine confirmed cases, including one death, had been reported in Kenya, all linked to that first patient. Health authorities report no evidence of wider community transmission so far.
What Kenyans should know
- Ebola spreads through direct contact with the blood or body fluids of a sick person, not through the air.
- Early symptoms include fever, headache, muscle pain, weakness, sore throat, vomiting and diarrhoea.
- The Bundibugyo strain has no approved vaccine or specific treatment yet, so early detection and isolation matter.
- If you have symptoms, isolate, avoid travel and call ahead before visiting a health facility.
How the outbreak affects businesses
- Fewer visitors and travellers: tourism, hotels and tour operators may see cancellations as foreign governments issue travel notices.
- Slower foot traffic: shops, restaurants and events may see fewer customers as people avoid crowds.
- Pressure on hospitals and clinics: facilities must screen, isolate and trace contacts quickly and keep accurate records.
- Schools and training centres: may need to move lessons online at short notice.
- Cash handling and queues: customers prefer contactless payment, delivery and online ordering.
- Staff absence: quarantined or worried staff mean teams must work remotely.
Practical steps for every business now
- Put handwashing points and hand sanitiser at every entrance.
- Ask staff with fever or symptoms to stay home and report to health authorities.
- Accept M-Pesa and card payments to reduce cash handling.
- Let customers order and book online or on WhatsApp.
- Set up remote working tools and back up your data.
- Share only official information from the Ministry of Health with staff and customers.
